Back to news articles Cash is king in Struisbaai Cash is king in Struisbaai Property sales are picking up in Struisbaai and cash buyers predominate.
Comine du Toit, owner of the local Aida office, reports that nearly 70% of recent sales were concluded on a cash basis. “Activity in the market started picking up in August last year and buyers are currently active in a broad price range. Cash transactions are common in all price categories ranging from about R300 000 to R4m,” she says.
Buyers are targeting houses and apartments, in contrast to the trend a few years ago when stands were the most popular choice. Buyers from the Cape make up the majority of current buyers but there is also a good representation of buyers from other parts of the country such as Gauteng and Limpopo, while buyers from Namibia have also made a showing.
Du Toit says the rental market, particularly for holiday accommodation, is healthy and investors stand to earn reasonable returns. “Struisbaai, just 5km from the most southern point of Africa where two oceans meet, is a popular holiday destination. It boasts the longest white beach in the Southern Hemisphere and is viewed as one of the safest swimming beaches in SA,” she says.
“It is also a fisherman’s paradise and many angling competitions are held on a regular basis, while kite-surfers from across the world regularly converge here to enjoy the excellent conditions, viewed by many as among the best available anywhere in the world.”
Du Toit adds that the absence of crime is another draw card for holidaymakers and as property buyers. “We have virtually no crime here and according to statistics Struisbaai is the safest destination in the country,” she says.
Struisbaai is about 200km from the international airport in Cape Town, placing it within easy striking distance of international travellers as well as holidaymakers from South Africa’s northern regions, who generally prefer to fly in and rent vehicles to reach the town.
